Blackpool Report £4.3m Loss as League One Clubs Face Growing Financial Pressure

Blackpool have become the latest English Football League club to report significant financial losses, posting a £4.3m deficit for the year ending 30 June 2025.

The figure marks a sharp increase from the £2.8m loss recorded the previous year and reflects a wider trend of financial strain across League One.

Of the 10 League One clubs to have published accounts for the 2024–25 season, average losses stand at £8.2m, nearly double the £4.2m average from the previous campaign. While the figures are influenced by Cardiff City’s £35.1m loss following relegation, other clubs such as Wycombe Wanderers (£9.8m) and Burton Albion (£8.1m) also reported significant increases.

Blackpool, currently battling relegation and sitting just one point above the drop zone ahead of a crucial fixture against Exeter City, remain heavily dependent on owner Simon Sadler, who took over the club in 2019.

Auditors highlighted the club’s financial vulnerability, warning that “a material uncertainty exists that may cast significant doubt on the company's ability to continue as a going concern”.

The club’s losses were driven in part by continued investment in the playing squad, but were compounded by a 9.1% drop in revenue. This decline was attributed to an early exit from cup competitions and reduced sponsorship income.

The figures underline the growing financial challenges facing clubs at this level, where rising costs and limited revenue streams continue to increase reliance on owner funding.
