Boro Rangers Withdraw from Northern League as Senior Men’s Team Folds

Boro Rangers has confirmed that its senior men’s first team has withdrawn from the Northern Football League with immediate effect after financial and operational challenges made the team unsustainable.

The Middlesbrough-based club, which reached the Division One play-offs in each of the last two seasons, had been seeking additional financial backing and support following the decision of chairman and secretary Mark Curtis to step down from overseeing the senior side.

Curtis, who guided the club’s rise from the Teesside League to the upper reaches of the Northern League in just over a decade, will continue in his roles overseeing Boro Rangers’ 86 junior teams.

Despite exploring a range of options to preserve the first team, the club has now formally submitted its resignation from the Northern League.

In a statement, Boro Rangers said:

"It is with great regret that we announce that, with immediate effect, the senior men's team will be withdrawing from the Ebac Northern League.

"This decision not been taken lightly and follows extensive consideration of the club's current position.

"While the commitment and dedication shown by our players, coaching staff, volunteers and supporters has never wavered, a combination of factors has made it increasingly difficult to sustain the team at the level required.

"These challenges include limited resources, difficulties in filling key operational and administrative roles, a shortage of matchday volunteers and uncertainty surrounding the infrastructure developments needed to support the club's future ambitions.

"After exploring all available options, we have reluctantly concluded that continuing the men's team is no longer feasible at this time.

"The club would like to place on record its sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported the men's team throughout the journey, including its players past and present, coaching staff, matchday volunteers, sponsors and our loyal supporters.

"We would also like to wish every player and every member of the management team every success in the next chapter of their footballing journey, and we thank them for the commitment, professionalism and pride they have shown in representing Boro Rangers.

"We are immensely proud of everything the team has achieved, from our time in the Teesside League, through the North Riding Premier Division and most recently competing in the Northern League, FA Cup and FA Vase.

"Along the way, the club secured back-to-back play-off positions in the Ebac Northern League First Division, reached two North Riding Senior Cup finals at the Riverside Stadium and created countless memories that will remain a lasting part of the club's history.

"These achievements are testament to the hard work, dedication and passion shown by everyone involved with Boro Rangers over the years.

"We would like to thank the Ebac Northern League and its member clubs for their support and competition over the years, and we wish everyone the very best for the season ahead and the future.

"While this chapter comes to an end, the legacy of the team and its achievements will not be forgotten."

Founded in 2014, Boro Rangers enjoyed a rapid rise through the English non-league pyramid. After progressing from the Teesside League and the North Riding Premier Division, the club joined the Northern League in 2022, earning promotion from Division Two at the first attempt before establishing itself as a play-off contender in Division One.

The club also reached two North Riding Senior Cup finals at Riverside Stadium and competed in both the FA Cup and the FA Vase during its rise.

The Northern League confirmed receipt of the club’s resignation in a statement, saying:

"We can confirm that this morning Boro Rangers submitted their resignation from the Ebac Northern League with immediate effect.

"Boro Rangers joined the league in 2022 and gained promotion in their first season to the First Division. They have been a valued member of the league throughout their time with us.

"Their resignation will be discussed at the next League Management Committee meeting and a further update will be provided after this time."
