Chelsea Record Highest Ever Premier League Loss
Chelsea have announced a pre-tax loss of £262m for the
2024–25 season — the largest deficit ever recorded in Premier League history.
The figure surpasses the previous record of £197.5m set by Manchester
City in 2011.
The loss comes despite Chelsea generating £490.9m in
revenue, the second-highest total in the club’s history. On the pitch, they
enjoyed a successful campaign, winning the UEFA Conference League and Club
World Cup while finishing fourth in the Premier League.
The club maintains it remains compliant with financial
regulations, including Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which allow
losses of up to £105m over a three-year period. These calculations differ from
headline pre-tax loss figures.
Since the BlueCo takeover in 2022, Chelsea have spent more
than £1bn on transfers, focusing on signing younger players on long-term
contracts.
Financial pressures have also included regulatory penalties,
with UEFA fining the club £26.7m earlier in the season for breaching squad cost
ratio rules, alongside ongoing monitoring.
The reported losses include fines, among them the £10.75m
Premier League sanction relating to agent payments during the ownership of Roman
Abramovich, as well as accounting write-offs for players such as Raheem
Sterling, who was released, and Mykhailo Mudryk, who is under investigation
following a failed drugs test.
Chelsea expect stronger financial results in the next
reporting period, boosted by approximately £85m from winning the Club World Cup
and around £80m in Champions League broadcast revenue.
The loss is lower than the £355m figure cited in UEFA’s
recent benchmarking report, which is understood to exclude transactions between
clubs under the same ownership, such as Chelsea and French side Strasbourg.
The club also confirmed their women’s team recorded a £17.1m
loss during the same period, with revenues of £21.3m.
