Clubs cut energy spend as Troo's Solar for Sport kicks off with first installs

A joint initiative designed to help sports clubs lower their energy spend is already delivering results just months after launch. Energy consultancy Troo and solar specialist HDM Energies launched the Solar for Sport campaign in November, and momentum is building fast.

Since launching, the campaign has attracted over 150 enquiries from clubs across the UK, with 36 installations already in progress and 12 completed. The scheme was created to help clubs access solar panels, EV charging and battery storage without the barrier of upfront costs, and demand has exceeded expectations.

Among the first to benefit is Heaton Stannington Football Club in Newcastle, where solar panels and battery storage are now in place. The club is expected to cut its annual energy spend by around 21%.

Felixstowe & Walton United have had a similar system installed, with projected annual savings of 25%. Uxbridge Football Club has opted for solar only, with expected savings of around 11%.

“We wanted to make solar power a practical option for clubs that would otherwise struggle to afford it,” said Callum Kerman, Contracts & Procurement Manager at HDM Energies “It’s been brilliant to see how much interest there’s been and how quickly clubs have been able to move ahead. We’ve focused on making the process simple and achievable, and that’s clearly struck a chord.”

The initiative uses a Power Purchase Agreement model, meaning clubs don’t pay upfront for the equipment. Instead, they benefit from lower energy rates and a professionally installed system, with HDM Energies managing delivery and installation, and Troo providing procurement expertise and ongoing support.

“We speak to clubs every day who are worried about rising costs and stretched budgets,” said Troo Energy Manager, Dean Hogg. “What they’ve told us is they want something that’s simple and makes financial sense. That’s exactly what Solar for Sport was built to offer, and it’s been brilliant to see so many clubs getting on board so quickly.”

Heaton Stannington Chairman, William Colwill added: “The install went really smoothly, and the team made everything straightforward from day one. We’re looking forward to seeing the savings build over time. It already feels like a step in the right direction for the club.”

Following the success of the early phase, Troo and HDM have confirmed plans to widen the scheme, offering the same solar solution to businesses outside of sport. More details will be shared soon.
