Colchester United Put Up for Sale as Chairman Robbie Cowling Seeks New Owner
Colchester United chairman Robbie Cowling has confirmed his intention to sell the club after 19 years in charge and has invited qualified investors to come forward.
Cowling, who took ownership in 2006, described the decision as the most important of his tenure. “The past nineteen years have been quite an experience for me and my family, but the time has come for someone new to take on this wonderful challenge. My final job as Chairman is going to be my most important one as I seek to find the right long-term steward for the club. I want my last decision for the club to be my best decision for the club,” he said in a statement.
The outgoing owner stressed that any new custodian must respect Colchester’s values and traditions, deepen its connection with supporters, and strengthen its role in the community.
Prospective buyers would acquire Colchester United debt-free, with full ownership of a League Two club boasting its own stadium, first-class training facilities, a Youth Academy, a diverse revenue model, and strong regional growth potential.
Colchester City Council is also involved in discussions to ensure local stakeholders have a say in the process. Council leader David King welcomed the approach, calling it a chance to secure the club’s future: “We’re proud to support Colchester United – a club that plays a vital role in our city’s sporting and community life. As the club looks to the future, we’re committed to working with new owners to help Colchester United thrive.”
Interest in the club is already said to be strong, with potential investors from the UK, Europe, the United States, and the Middle East making enquiries.
