England Squad meet up ahead of Qatar World Cup

The Three Lions squad have been arriving at St George's Park ahead of flying out for the Qatar World Cup on Tuesday morning.

Gareth Southgate named his 26 man squad last Thursday and among the expected names there were a couple of notable additions- and omissions.

With Chelsea full back Reece James ruled out Southgate included Liverpool's Trent Alexander Arnold in the squad, despite having previosly overlooked him and criticised his defensive capabilities.

Kyle Walker was also included though will not be fully fit until the second phase of the tournament after being out for most of the season with injury.

Further forward Leicester's James Maddision received his first call up since 2019 having been in fine form for his club despite their struggles this season. Maddison has insisted he will be fit despite picking up a knock in his side's 2-0 win over West Ham at Leicester, a game in which he again scored.

One man who won't be on the plane is Brentford's Ivan Toney, who responded to his omission by scoring a brace as his side stunned champions Manchester City on Saturday lunctime. There were no other injury concerns over the weekend as the Premier League finished until Boxing Day.

The unique nature of the World Cup being staged mid-season will mean Southgate will only have less than a week to work with his squad before their group stage opener against Iran on Monday.
