FA Investigating Burton Albion Over Record-Breaking Transfer Activity

Burton Albion are under investigation by the Football Association following their unprecedented recruitment drive during the summer 2024 transfer window, which saw the League One club sign a British-record 23 players.

The FA and English Football League are currently working with Burton to examine deals made in the wake of the club’s takeover by the Sweden-based Nordic Football Group (NFG). While the club has not disclosed specific details, BBC Radio Derby reports the inquiry centres on the extent of outsourced recruitment involvement and potential conflicts of interest.

Following the ownership change, NFG oversaw a complete squad rebuild, relying heavily on external recruitment services to assemble a new-look team. Concerns have been raised regarding transparency and governance within those arrangements.

Club chief operating officer Tom Mahon, who stepped into the role in May, said the inquiry is focused entirely on last summer’s transfer activity and has not hindered current club operations. “It hasn't stopped us recruiting so far – we have had a number of players come through the door and a number of players have gone out,” Mahon told BBC Radio Derby.

Despite the ongoing investigation, Burton Albion continue preparations for the 2025–26 League One campaign, confident that the matter will not impact their ability to compete or conduct transfer business in the short term.
