Grays Athletic given go ahead to renovate abandoned Stadium
Grays Athletic's nomadic existence finally looks set to be at an end as they begin redevelopment of a long abandoned stadium.
The Isthmian League Division One North side have been without a permanent home for fifteen years and have had to ground share with several other non-league sides and at one point West Ham's reserves.
But now work can finally begin on rebuilding Ship Lane, the former home of fellow non-league side Thurrock United, which the club originally purchased in 2024.
Now a council vote to allow work to begin has passed, and the club has six months to get the project under way.
A statement from the club read, "As the variation to the plans were relatively insignificant, the planning officer recommended for the committee to approve the application and subsequently the planning committee voted in favour of the amended application.
"This now means as a football club, we can now start planning how we make Ship Lane our home for decades to come. We have made contact with Group One and our solicitors and hope the protracted process of transferring the stadium to us can be expedited, and we can begin the renovation works as soon as we are able to secure the funding necessary to transform the derelict stadium into a vibrant home for us and our community."
