Liverpool Agree Minority Investment Deal as Jeff Bezos-Backed Consortium Acquires Stake
Liverpool have agreed to sell a significant minority stake
in the club to a consortium that includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, in a deal
valued at between £5 billion and £6 billion.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool's owners, confirmed it
has entered into a definitive agreement with 1892 Holdings for what it
described as a "strategic minority investment" in the club.
The consortium is led by British-Indian businessman Amit
Bhatia and also includes billionaire Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. As
part of the agreement, Bhatia is expected to become Liverpool's vice-chairman
and join an expanded board, subject to regulatory approval.
Bhatia recently ended his 18-year association with Queens
Park Rangers after relinquishing his stake in the Championship club last month.
He is also the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal.
Bezos, the founder of Amazon and one of the world's
wealthiest individuals, is making his first move into sports ownership through
the investment. However, he is not expected to take a place on Liverpool's
board.
Instead, Bryan Baum, founder of venture capital firm K5
Sports, will join the board alongside Elaine Saverin. Bezos is the largest
investor in K5 Sports, which forms part of the consortium backing the deal.
Despite the investment, the agreement is not expected to
alter Liverpool's approach in the transfer market. It is understood that no
additional or separate transfer budget has been created as a result of the
transaction.
The deal also includes an option for the consortium to
increase its investment in the future. While this could position the group to
become majority shareholders should FSG decide to sell further shares, no
commitment has been made regarding any future change in ownership structure.
The agreement represents a significant development in
Liverpool's ownership model, providing fresh investment while allowing Fenway
Sports Group to retain control of the club. The deal values Liverpool at
between £5 billion and £6 billion.
