Morecambe FC Owner Sacks the Board of Directors
Morecambe FC owner Jason Whittingham has dismissed the club’s board of directors after they threatened to place the club into administration if a long-delayed sale was not completed.
On Tuesday, the outgoing board had issued a final ultimatum, giving Whittingham’s Bond Group Investments until 6pm to finalise a deal with Panjab Warriors, who have been in protracted takeover talks. When the deadline passed, the board announced they would begin contacting administrators.
In response, Whittingham said he had "started the process to dismiss the board" with immediate effect to take control of the situation and "ensure the club has the best chance to avoid administration". He denied accusations of stalling and called the current state a “crisis point.”
The Shrimps were relegated to the National League in May, marking their first season outside the EFL since 2007. A sale to Panjab Warriors had already been approved by the EFL earlier in June.
Panjab Warriors claimed to have already paid £3.8 million to Bond Group and an additional £630,000 to settle loans against the club. They also said they had injected a further £1.7 million over the past 14 months to sustain operations.
Morecambe MP Lizzi Collinge has called on Bond Group to “get on with” the sale, while the ownership saga has drawn mounting criticism from supporters and stakeholders.
Whittingham, who led the club’s acquisition in 2018, has publicly stated he “can’t wait to get out” in previous interviews. Further updates are expected on Thursday.
