Morecambe takeover saga finally ends

Morecambe have confirmed that the proposed takeover by Panjab Warriors has received clearance to proceed from the English Football League (EFL).

The club has been on the market since 2022, with the lengthy takeover process casting a shadow over the past three seasons.

The Shrimps were relegated from the EFL to the National League last season after finishing bottom of League Two, amid off-field financial challenges.

"This is more than a business venture; it's a commitment to the fans, the town, and the future of Morecambe FC," said Gurpreet Singh, external head of communications for Panjab Warriors.

"Our aim is to build upon the clubs rich heritage, ensuring stability and fostering unity across all parts of the community.

"Panjab Warriors would like to extend their thanks to the club and its Board of Directors for their co-operation in obtaining EFL approval, and also to the EFL for their patience and support in getting to this stage."

In an update issued in April, following confirmation of their relegation, Morecambe's board stated that "positive progress" had been made towards the sale of the club.

The 2024–25 campaign marked a difficult period for Morecambe, who will now play National League football for the first time since 2007. The season began with the club hastily assembling a squad after a transfer embargo was lifted, only to see further transfer activity halted mid-season until financial guarantees were secured to complete the campaign.

Morecambe spent much of the season in the bottom two, with four consecutive defeats at the end confirming a second relegation in three years.

Following their drop from the EFL, manager Derek Adams noted that the club still lacked a clear plan for the 2025–26 season amid ongoing uncertainty around its ownership.

"In the interests of transparency and until final due diligence and contracts are finalised, we are not in a position to say anything further at this stage," Gurpreet added.

"However, once we are in this position, we are looking forward to meeting with supporters and media to update via the appropriate channels."
