Newcastle United confirm purchase of adjacent property to St James' Park
Premier League side Newcastle United have confirm they have purchased a 'significant portion' of the Leazes Terrace building which sits opposite St James' Park.
The acquisitionof the Grade I listed structure includes its northern, southern and western elevations – including all areas facing the stadium.
It also includes most of its eastern elevation, with a small block of private residences remaining in this part of the building.
In a statement on their official website the club said that the purchase was 'part of the club's long-term planning as it continues to assess all credible and feasible options for the future of its home stadium.'
'It provides Newcastle United with greater flexibility and ensures any future decisions support the club's ambitions, as well as its responsibilities to the local community and the city of Newcastle upon Tyne.'
The club also recognised the building’s 'historic and architectural significance and is committed to its preservation'.
Since the club's takeover by the Saudi backed Public Investment Fund, the rebuilding/expansion of Newcastle's iconic stadium has long been speculated.
They end their Premier League campaign this weekend away at Fulham looking to secure a top-half finish, with an outside chance of European football should other results go their way.
