No Bank Holiday Planned if England Win Euro 2025

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed there are no plans for an additional bank holiday if England win the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final on Sunday.

Following the Lionesses' thrilling extra-time semi-final win over Italy, the Prime Minister hailed the team as “an inspiration to the nation,” but his spokesperson has ruled out granting a national day off in the event of victory over Spain.

The match kicks off at 17:00 BST on Sunday, and pub licensing hours across England and Wales will be extended until 01:00 BST to allow fans to celebrate. The government has also stated that the team will be formally honoured upon their return, regardless of the result.

Despite the government's current stance, the Liberal Democrats have renewed calls for a public holiday. Their culture, media and sport spokesperson Max Wilkinson told BBC Sport:
“Fans and patriots across the country deserve the chance to celebrate the talent, success and historic achievement of this amazing team. A bank holiday would also give our hospitality industry a much-needed assist and boost.”

There was no extra holiday granted following England’s historic Euro 2022 win, although Starmer – then opposition leader – voiced support for one. He echoed the sentiment again when England reached the World Cup final in 2023, saying there “should be a celebratory bank holiday if the Lionesses bring it home.”
