Premier League set for quiet end to January transfer window

The Transfer Window for clubs in England is set to close at 11pm on Thursday with a notable decrease in deals being done.

January 2023's window saw a record high in spending in the Premier League with over £800m spent, but this year has been far quieter with Tottenham's £25m purchase of Radu Dragisin the biggest outlay of any top flight club.

Whilst Deadline Day is sure to bring a flurry of late activity the usual rumour mill and speculation about big last minute moves is far quieter than in previous years.

Most commentators will point to the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules as the reason for the lack of activity. Everton have already been docked ten points for breaching them and Nottingham Forest have also been charged.

It's believed a number of clubs have a greater need to offload players than bring them in, in order to stay on the right side of the line financially.

The likes of Newcastle and Chelsea have been linked with moves away for some of their top players but as of yet no moves have materialised.

The lack of spending from the top clubs has also seen a reduction in activity in the lower leagues as well, with many moves coming in the form of loans as clubs try to limit their spending.

Whatever the reason it seems that the January 2024 window will be closing with a gentle push rather than it's usual slam.
