Reports suggest National League set to end season
Reports in various newspapers suggest that the National League is set to follow the rest of the National League System and say that they wish to end the 2019/20 season.
The league is currently suspended until at least April 3 due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The Premier League and EFL remain committed to finishing their respective league seasons while non-league competitions such as the Northern Premier League are pushing to end the season as it currently stands despite between seven and 10 matches remaining for most sides.
The Evening Standard has reported that the National League may intend to go one step further by voiding the current season altogether which will have significant repercussions on the promotion and relegation system with the EFL.
The Daily Star claims that the National League have already made the decision to void the entire campaign and cancel all remaining fixtures.
The League will now meet with the FA in order to ratify the decision while also confirming which teams, if any, get promoted and relegated.
The decision has reportedly been made to financially protect clubs during an uncertain spell.
Barrow are currently four points clear at the top of the table and looked set for a Football League return for the first time since 1972. Meanwhile, Pools sit just three points off a play-off place with seven games remaining.
If promotion is approved, Barrow and second-placed Harrogate Town would be promoted to League Two. Logistically this would pose some stumbling blocks and potential legal ramifications should the season be declared void. Also Harrogate’s artificial pitch would not be allowed in the EFL under current rules.
