Roman Abramovich puts Chelsea up for sale

Chelsea's Russian owner Roman Abramovich has put the European and World champions up for sale.

In the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, The billionaire owner announced that 'stewardship' of the club would pass to the club's charitable foundation.
However a few days later, amid rumours he was looking to offload the club, he released a statement confirming that he would be selling the club, completely severing his near 20 year association.

"I would like to address the speculation in media over the past few days in relation to my ownership of Chelsea FC. In the current situation, I have therefore taken the decision to sell the Club, as I believe this is in the best interest of the Club, the fans, the employees, as well as the Club’s sponsors and partners."

Abramovich took over the club in 2003 and under his ownership have become one of the most successful clubs both in England and Europe.

Five Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, two Europa Leagues and a host of domestic trophies have littered his stewardship, despite his notoriously cut-throat attitude towards his managers.

The Club World Cup trophy, won by Chelsea for the first time in February, will be the final addition to the cabinet under his tenure. Addressing the club's fans he said he hoped he 'will be able to visit Stamford Bridge one last time to say goodbye to all of you in person.

'It has been a privilege of a lifetime to be part of Chelsea FC and I am proud of all our joint achievements. Chelsea Football Club and its supporters will always be in my heart.'

He also confirmed that he would not be asking the club to repay the vast sums he loaned them over the years, and that any net profit of the sale will be given to a charitable foundation. "The foundation will be for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine. This includes providing critical funds towards the urgent and immediate needs of victims, as well as supporting the long-term work of recovery." he said.
