Wolverhampton Sporting Resign from North West Counties League with Immediate Effect
Wolverhampton Sporting have resigned from the North West Counties League (NWCFL) with immediate effect, league officials have confirmed.
The club, which plays at Pride Park in Great Wyrley, formally tendered its resignation on Tuesday, 3 February. As a result, Wolverhampton Sporting’s playing record for the season will be expunged and all player registrations have been cancelled.
The decision follows a challenging campaign on the pitch, with the club recording just one league victory and suffering eight consecutive defeats. Their most recent fixture ended in a 3-1 loss away at Market Drayton Town on 31 January.
Wolverhampton Sporting are understood to have been unhappy after being transferred into the NWCFL from the Midland Football League by the Football Association ahead of the season.
Two upcoming fixtures had already been postponed prior to the resignation, including Tuesday’s scheduled match against New Mills and this weekend’s fixture against Cammell Laird 1907.
A statement from the NWCFL said:
"On Monday 2nd February, Wolverhampton Sporting Community gave notification of their intention to resign from The North West Counties Football League, effective from Tuesday 3rd February 2026.
The Board of Directors have reluctantly accepted their resignation from the Competition.
We wish the club all the best for the future and hope that they will be back enjoying football very soon.
Their playing record will therefore be expunged and all player and staff registrations cancelled with effect from 10th February 2026.
It means that the First Division South will run with 18 teams for the remainder of the season.
Our website will be adjusted on the morning of 10th February 2026 to reflect this news and the League will be making no further comment."
