Stockport Town Resign From North West Counties Football League Ahead of 2026-27 Season

Stockport Town have confirmed they will resign from the North West Counties Football League ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The announcement came just before The Football Association revealed the club allocations for the 2026/27 season.

In a club statement, Stockport Town said: "After careful consideration of Stockport Town FC’s long-term future and its ability to compete at Step 5 of the National League System, the Board has taken the difficult decision to resign from the North West Counties Football League for the 2026/27 season.

"The Board would like to thank all staff, players, volunteers, supporters, and everyone who has represented the club since its inception in 2014 for their contribution, dedication, and support over the years.

"Further details regarding future plans will be announced in due course."

The NWCFL also wished the club well following the decision.

Stockport Town joined the league at the beginning of the 2015/16 season in the First Division and enjoyed a steady rise through the non-league pyramid.

The club finished fourth in their debut campaign before reaching the semi-finals of the play-offs, while in their third season they advanced to the Cheshire Senior Cup Final, losing 3-0 to Nantwich Town.

Following league restructuring, Stockport spent several seasons in the First Division South before narrowly missing promotion in consecutive campaigns.

In 2022/23, they finished second behind Wythenshawe but lost in the play-off semi-finals to Cheadle Town.

A year later, they again finished runners-up and reached the play-off final, only to lose on penalties to Abbey Hey.

Despite that defeat, Stockport earned promotion to the Premier Division as one of the highest-ranked losing play-off finalists based on points-per-game records.

The club finished 10th in their first Premier Division season before securing 12th place this campaign.

Across their time in the NWCFL, Stockport Town played 395 matches, winning 189, drawing 72 and losing 134. They scored 799 goals and conceded 602.
